On Monday, May 13, the 32nd annual Pepsi Pops will take place at the Ross Barnett Reservoir’s Old Trace Park, under the generous sponsorship of Brown Bottling Group, your Pepsi-Cola distributor. Additional sponsors include Regions Bank, EastGroup Properties, and media sponsorship from WLBT and the ClearChannel Radio Group.
The gates to the park will open at 4:30 p.m. and at 5:15, the evening’s special guest hosts Rick & Kim from Miss 103 will introduce the pre-concert entertainment. This year the three featured groups include a group of students from the JPS String Program led by Amanda Morato, Cello&Voice, a unique cutting edge cross-genre group that blends vocals and cello stylings, and Dialogue, a Chicago tribute band.
Children will have their own special activities area, the Pepsi Playground, which will be open from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In addition to a space jump and slides, children can enjoy a number of other games and activities, including a face painting booth.
Local artist, Wyatt Waters will be on-site creating a painting of the event. The painting will be available for sale through a silent auction to benefit the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. Prints will also be available for sale.
Concessions including Pepsi beverage products will be provided by Burgers and Blues.
The public is also invited to bring their family picnic basket to the event. Local restaurateur Jeff Good will judge the annual “Best Picnic Design” contest and award prizes to the winners. The Jackson Symphony League will be selling glow sticks and Pepsi Pops posters.
At 7:30 p.m., Maestro Crafton Beck and the MSO will take the stage for a rousing concert of audience favorites, including music from Jurassic Park, and Phantom of the Opera, music by Irving Berlin and Lennon & McCartney and marches by John Phillip Sousa.
A special feature will be an guest appearance by Ebony Nicole Sutton, a senior at Forest Hill High School, who will conduct the orchestra in 76 Trombones by Meredith Wilson. Her appearance is sponsored by BKD. She is a student in MSO’s JPS String Program. The evening will culminate in a fantastic fireworks finale.
Tickets may be purchased at Kroger grocery stores, McDade Markets, Regions Bank branches and the MSO office. Ticket prices are $12 for adults when purchased in advance; $15 at the gate. Children’s tickets (ages 4-18) are $5. Children aged 3 and under are free.
